Ushers Ministry

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of Wickedness.

The Ministry of Helps in the form of

The Usher Ministry …

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Welcome to the Mount Olive Ushers’ Ministry!! We believe this ministry is ordained by God and anointed by the Holy Spirit. Ushers’ Ministry is one of the helps, with a variety of functions. It is a very visible ministry, and it plays a vital role before, after and during Church Services and special events.

THE USHER’S CALLING

WE ARE CALLED TO REPRESENT JESUS CHRIST and to be an extension of His heart for those in our congregation and for visitors.

WE ARE CALLED TO ASSIST OUR PASTOR in accomplishing his vision through the teaching of God’s Word and equipping the saints for further work of the ministry and helping to fulfill his vision for the local church and ministry.

WE ARE CALLED TO MEET, GREET AND DIRECT PEOPLE who come to our church. We represent our church and our Pastor to every new visitor. We are called to actively meet people and make them feel welcome and important. One of our assignments is to kindly and affectionately greet people and then seat them in our sanctuary as they come to worship. We are called to direct people to the various other places and ministries in the church.

WE ARE CALLED TO RECEIVE OFFERINGS with the right attitude in a cheerful manner, joyfully and willingly serving unto the Lord.

WE ARE CALLED TO MAINTAIN ORDER during our church services and limit disturbances that can separate people from God’s Word and harmony with the Holy Spirit.

WE ARE CALLED TO THE MINISTRY OF HELPS doing good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. We are also called to demonstrate God’s love and care to His people.

We believe God raises up and prepares people for this ministry. This ministry is for people who have good people skills and enjoy helping others. However, don’t feel discouraged if you feel unprepared, inexperienced or lack ability. God is not as concerned with your ability as He is with your availability. God is looking for people with a committed, servant’s heart. Before you enter into the practical aspect of this ministry of helps, we will train and equip you to serve God’s people.

As with all levels of ministry at Mount Olive, this ministry/auxiliary participation requires participation in a form of teaching ministry (i.e., Sunday School, Bible Study, etc.). If you believe God has called you to be an usher and you are willing to be actively involved in one or more teaching ministries, please contact our ministry president, Sis. Myra White, for more information.

Aspects of the Ushers’ Ministry

The Usher: Ushers serve as the official doorkeepers of the Church. Ushers distribute printed materials regarding church and worship services; and, assist those who enter the church with appropriate seating. Ushers are the collectors of tithes and offerings given during services. Ushers assist the Pastor in maintaining order during worship services through managing sanctuary entry and physical movement. Ushers provide direction to different parts of the Church, as well as other aspects of the Helps as required. This position has specific uniform requirements.

The Parking Lot Attendant: The Parking Lot Attendant is likely the first point of contact made to those who approach entry to the church. Always with a warm smile and welcoming spirit, the Parking Lot Attendant provides direction to vehicle drivers ensuring parking slots are filled efficiently, as well as special parking needs for visiting pastors, churches and/or people needing parking with handicapped accessibility. This position has specific safety-affiliated uniform requirements.

The Greeter: Greeters are one of the first points of contact to those who enter the church building. Greeters are responsible for extending a personal welcome to as many people as possible who enter the church, with special and specific emphasis on those who are visitors. Greeters are also responsible for collecting new membership information on those who may, during any given service, join the church.

The Nurse’s Aide: The Nurse’s Aide bears the medically-affiliated title in that he/she should be able to provide direction and generalized medical attention to those who may be in some form of medical distress. With this responsibility, the Nurse’s Aide is required to be trained, and maintain certification in CPR and other general first aide techniques. The Nurse’s Aide also provides pulpit assistance to the pastor/preacher and pulpit area. This position has specific uniform requirements.

Junior Ushers:

Working along side adult ushers, we believe the Junior Ushers Ministry to be an intricate extension of the Ushers’ Ministry. With application of the scripture reference Proverbs 22:6, “… train up a child …” we believe to also be applicable in the ministry of helps/service.

The Junior Ushers Ministry is open to children ages 8 – 16,   Junior Ushers are taught all aspects of the ushers’ ministry, are assigned, and expected to render service with dedication, commitment and responsibility in their own junior usher capacity.

We also realize that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders; and, tomorrow’s leadership will require ushers. In training our children in Ushers ministry while they are young, they should transition to full service as an adult usher when they do reach adulthood. The Junior Usher position also has specific uniform requirements.
